Eco-Friendly EV Cars are Better for the Environment and Your Pocket

The Turks and Caicos Islands look to electric vehicles and alternative energy to reduce global warming and give massive savings on fuel costs.

For around 20 years now, there has been a scientific consensus that switching from fossil fuels to electricity is vital for reducing vehicle emissions and avoiding the worst impacts of climate change, a particular concern for the low-lying islands of the Caribbean.

Three years ago, Turks and Caicos utility company FortisTCI began exploring environmentally sustainable energy solutions and integrating non-traditional services and new technology. The company’s Electric Vehicle (EV) and charging station pilot project was launched as the first step in preparing for the transportation industry’s electrification and a positive shot in the arm for the Caribbean renewable energy.

The FortisTCI Nissan Leaf Acenta is a 100% electric car with a 30 kWh battery that can power the vehicle up to 100 miles on a single charge. With a good range and no tailpipe pollution or greenhouse gas emissions, this eco-friendly car is an ideal option for island economies.

Another FortisTCI initiative is the company’s grid-tied solar options offered to commercial and residential customers. This follows the commissioning of FortisTCI’s first grid-tied solar energy systems on two commercial properties on Providenciales, as well as a one-megawatt large-scale, utility-led solar project encompassing several sites across the islands.

With fuel and electricity prices in the Caribbean among the highest globally, FortisTCI anticipates high demand for cleaner and cheaper renewable energy options in the islands as its first EV project is put through its paces.
